Power2X and Advario have partnered to build a global “e-SAF hub” to produce and store sustainable jet fuel in the Port of Rotterdam. The project aims to generate more than 250,000 tonnes of e-SAF per year, making it the largest such facility announced to date.

The hub will have the capacity to produce enough fuel to serve around 7,000 flights a year between Amsterdam and New York, and will be supported by a robust storage and logistics system , managed by Advario . This infrastructure has a capacity of 230,000 cubic metres, and will benefit from its strategic location in one of Europe’s leading energy ports.
The plant will use imported green methanol , an essential feedstock, produced from green hydrogen and biogenic carbon. Advario has acquired the former Aluchemie plant, where the infrastructure for this project will be built. The Port of Rotterdam is rapidly transforming into a clean energy production hub, with direct access to European airports such as Schiphol , thus facilitating the efficient distribution of synthetic and sustainable fuels.
Furthermore, the project aligns with the European Union’s aviation targets, which require 20% of fuel used to come from renewable sources by mid-2030 . Power2X and Advario aim for this hub to contribute 40% of the e-SAF volume needed in Europe by the end of the decade.
Occo Roelofsen, CEO of Power2X, highlighted the importance of this project in accelerating the energy transition: “ Our goal is to enable competitive production of e-SAF on a global scale in the heart of Europe .” Bas Verkooijen, CEO of Advario, said that this initiative is an example of the company’s commitment to leading the way towards a sustainable and continuously improved energy infrastructure for the future.
Sustainable aviation fuel enables a 90% reduction in carbon emissions compared to current fuel use, and the implementation of new energies in Rotterdam positions the city as a key player in the energy transition worldwide.
The Port of Rotterdam Authority’s Managing Director, Boudewijn Siemons, underlined the importance of the project: “ The Port of Rotterdam will be a key pillar in meeting and satisfying future demand for SAF across Europe .”
