Danish company Ørsted has installed the first suction bucket jacket ( SBJ ) foundation at its Greater Changhua 2b and 4 offshore wind farms , located off the coast of Taiwan. With a combined capacity of 920 MW, this project represents the first deployment of this technology in the Asia-Pacific region.

The SBJ system reduces seabed disturbance and noise pollution during installation. Furthermore, its detachable design facilitates complete removal at the end of the park’s lifespan, aligning with Ørsted ‘s environmental commitment and promoting ecological coexistence.

Furthermore, this type of foundation has the ability to attract marine life, integrating itself as an ecosystem-friendly structure . This procedure minimizes the ecological impact and streamlines the installation schedule.

The 66 SBJ foundations were fully fabricated and inspected before being moved to the operating area. The project has now entered the massive installation phase of the structures, preparing for the assembly of the first 14 MW wind turbines.

The Greater Changhua 2b and 4 project is emerging as a benchmark for energy transition in the region. By adopting innovative and sustainable technologies, Taiwan is strengthening its role in the development of offshore wind energy, setting standards for future developments in Asia.
