The largest gold producer in the world, the American company Newmont , will invest more than 540 million dollars to extend the useful life of its Cerro Negro mine in Santa Cruz, Argentina, until 2034. The announcement was made by the company in the framework of the visit made to the deposit by the Mining Secretary, Fernanda Ávila.
“We are convinced that the remotely controlled operation is the key step towards automation, which creates new opportunities, increases the company’s productivity and reinforces the safety at work of our employees”, said Marcelo Campos Ubeira, General Manager of Newmont.
In addition, he highlighted that “after its implementation in 2022, Cerro Negro became the first mine in Argentina and the first for Newmont in South America to implement the technology in the production process.”
During 2022, the company processed 278,000 ounces of gold, generating exports of more than 500 million dollars and is currently one of the main gold-producing deposits in Argentina and the most important in the province of Santa Cruz.

Starting with the investment of 540 million dollars announced today, it will be able to extend the useful life of the deposit until 2034.
The American company recently announced the purchase of Newcrest, thereby reaffirming its leadership as the largest gold producer in the world.
After her visit, the Ávila secretary stressed that: “these investments demonstrate the commitment of the companies and the potential that the country has to develop this activity in the future.”
Regarding the project in Santa Cruz, the official stressed that “these are state-of-the-art technology facilities: it is the first remotely operated mine in the country. This advance improves the safety and efficiency of the production process”.
María Eugenia Sampalione, Director of External Relations and Sustainability of the company, indicated that “the main challenge we face is that the production process is not interrupted in order to maintain the level of productivity that we set ourselves and to continue advancing with various initiatives that seek to contribute to the development of Argentina in general and of the province of Santa Cruz in particular”.
