The diesel-electric icebreaker Oden, renowned for its maneuverability and power in Arctic and Baltic missions, has undergone a significant modernization of its piping system . The Swedish Maritime Administration selected GF Piping Systems to replace the old steel infrastructure with thermoplastic piping , improving the efficiency and durability of the jet propulsion system.
The Oden, one of the most powerful non-nuclear icebreakers in the world, operates in extreme conditions that demand maximum performance from its systems. Its jet thrusters, responsible for projecting water at high pressure to reduce friction with the ice, depended on steel pipes that suffered from corrosion problems . To avoid future failures and improve operational efficiency, it was decided to replace 200 meters of pipes with an advanced solution in HDPE DN1000.
Efficiency with a thermoplastic piping system
GF Piping Systems supplied a complete system consisting of HDPE pipes, electrofusion fittings and PE100 couplers. Unlike steel , this material offers superior corrosion resistance , prolonging the life of the system without the need for intensive maintenance. In addition, the smooth interior surfaces of the pipes optimize water flow without compromising pressure or thruster capacity.
The modernization process presented technical challenges due to the tight spaces within the Oden . To ensure an effective installation, GF Piping Systems provided customized engineering assistance, including feasibility studies, stress analysis, and hydraulic calculations.
Thanks to this detailed planning, a team of 14 installers completed the project in 2,000 working hours , achieving a more cost-effective and efficient solution than metal alternatives.

With the implementation of this technology, the Oden now has a more reliable and efficient jet propulsion system. The modernization not only improves performance when sailing in frozen waters, but also contributes to sustainability and reduced operating costs in the long term.
