Mining company Anglo American and H2 Green Steel have partnered to advance the area of low carbon steelmaking.
The alliance will see Anglo American supply iron ore from its Kumba mines in South Africa and Minas-Rio mine in Brazil to H2 Green Steel, a Swedish hydrogen and steel company.
Vargas-backed H2 Green Steel will use iron ore as a feedstock for the direct reduced iron (DRI) production process at its Boden works in northern Sweden.
According to specialists, the DRI steel production method is significantly less carbon intensive compared to conventional methods.
The process can be mostly CO₂-free when green hydrogen is used as a reducing agent.
Anglo American’s chief marketing officer, Peter Whitcutt, commented: “Our work with H2 Green Steel will focus on exploring ways to source premium quality iron ore responsibly produced at our operations for use as a feedstock in the manufacturing process. low-carbon production from the Boden plant, paving the way for a cleaner and greener way of producing steel, one of the critical materials for the deployment of energy transition infrastructure and for ongoing global socio-economic development.”
For her part, the director of procurement of H2 Green Steel, Luisa Orre, indicated: “Our purpose is to decarbonise the sectors that are difficult to reduce, and this is only possible with strong partnerships throughout the value chain with a true commitment to reduce scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions.
“We are impressed by Anglo American’s efforts to bring high-quality iron ore products to customers focused on low carbon iron and steelmaking, and we look forward to continuing to work with them, not just for our first green hydrogen integrated steel plant in Sweden, but also for other future locations globally,” Orre concluded.
