ExxonMobil has begun the process to obtain environmental approval for its new offshore development in Guyana, centered on the Haimara condensate gas field within the Stabroek block.
According to official information, the company submitted the application to Guyana’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which has already determined the need to conduct a full environmental impact assessment before issuing a decision.
This requirement responds to the magnitude of the project and the possible long-term effects on the environment and communities linked to energy activity.
Scope of the Haimara project
The project involves multiple operational phases. These include well drilling and completion, as well as the installation of subsea infrastructure, including equipment and flow pipes.
Likewise, the plan incorporates the commissioning of a floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel, specifically designed to process hydrocarbons extracted offshore.
The EPA noted that the project could generate significant environmental and socioeconomic impacts. These risks are associated with both the scale of the operation and the anticipated duration of the activities.
Consequently, the environmental study should analyze aspects such as marine biodiversity, emissions, and interaction with fishing activities and local communities.
