Lithium in Argentina is consolidating as one of the most strategic resources for the global energy transition, and in this context, Rio Tinto has approved an investment of USD 2.5 billion to expand the Rincón project in the province of Salta.

This expansion, which will increase lithium production capacity in the region, responds to the growing demand for key materials for battery manufacturing , consolidating Argentina as a key player in the global lithium industry.

Expansion of the Rincon Project

The expansion of the Rincon project will allow Rio Tinto to achieve a production capacity of 60,000 tonnes of high-grade lithium carbonate per year . This increase in sustainable production capacity includes the construction of an additional 57,000 tonne plant, which will add to the initial 3,000 tonne plant, establishing a production process that prioritises efficiency and respect for the environment.

The refining process will be carried out using advanced direct lithium extraction (DLE) technology, a method that optimizes mineral extraction and also minimizes environmental impact by reducing water use and effluents generated.

Benefits of lithium production in Argentina

Rio Tinto’s investment will bring a number of benefits to local communities and businesses in the region. The expansion is expected to generate a large number of jobs and economic opportunities, contributing significantly to the development of Salta as a key centre for mineral production.

The company is committed to meeting the highest sustainability standards, ensuring its operations are profitable and environmentally responsible. Rio Tinto thus reaffirms its commitment to ESG standards, which are fundamental to its long-term strategy.

A key step in Rio Tinto’s global strategy

Lithium is a key pillar of Rio Tinto’s raw materials portfolio. According to Jakob Stausholm, Group CEO, the expansion of the Rincón project supports the company’s global strategy, which seeks to secure its position as a leader in the production of battery materials and contribute to the supply of lithium on a global scale at a time when demand is constantly growing.

Thanks to Argentina’s favourable economic policies and reforms such as the Large Investment Incentive Regime (RIGI), Rio Tinto is well positioned to capitalise on Salta’s potential and consolidate its role within the high-purity lithium supply chain.
