AP Moller-Maersk has been awarded the first two of four cranes, manufactured by ZPMC , for the terminal in Rijeka, Croatia. These structures will improve maritime trade in the Eastern Adriatic and Central Europe.
The first STS cranes at Rijeka Gateway Terminal
The new Rijeka terminal is a project, the result of a collaboration between APM Terminals and its partner ENNA . The inauguration is scheduled to begin operations in 2025. Strategically located, this terminal will position itself as a gateway to connect the Adriatic with the logistics corridors of Central Europe, optimizing trade routes and strengthening the continent’s maritime infrastructure.
Beyond its commercial relevance, Maersk has shown a commitment to the local community. The ship-to-shore ( STS ) cranes, a symbol of innovation and development, are named after four outstanding women in Croatian history, including the country’s first Olympic medalist.
This initiative was the result of a participatory campaign in which local residents were invited to vote, strengthening the bond between the terminal and the community. In addition, the installation area will be named the Powerful Women of Rijeka Square , a tribute to influential female figures in the region.
“ It’s amazing to see the cranes finally here in Rijeka . After months of preparation, the machinery has finally arrived, and we are starting to feel this terminal becoming a palpable reality. We are excited to see how it becomes the new gateway to the region. “We are delighted to announce that we are pleased …
The STS cranes represent just one part of Maersk’s infrastructure plan to turn Rijeka into a world-class logistics hub. These machines are critical for loading and unloading operations, ensuring the terminal is ready to handle large volumes of maritime traffic in an efficient and sustainable manner.
The Rijeka Gateway Terminal promises to enhance the port’s operational capabilities and boost local economic development and attract investment to the Adriatic. The terminal is expected to serve as a catalyst for maritime trade, benefiting both Croatia and neighbouring countries, and reinforcing Maersk’s position as a leader in the global maritime sector.
