On March 12, a major milestone was recorded for HyIron and the transition to sustainability in Namibia: the Oshivela plant began producing green hydrogen. This development represents a major step forward for the green iron industry, aiming to eliminate carbon emissions from iron production.

Green hydrogen production at the Oshivela plant

HyIron’s 12 MW electrolyzer is now the largest of its kind in Southern Africa. This electrolytic unit, located in a smart microgrid, generates stable green hydrogen and is designed to boost carbon-neutral iron production. The company is working on expanding the capacity of this system to reach its maximum output, which will provide a solid foundation for sustainable ironmaking.

This achievement would not have been possible without the support of the Namibian government , which has spearheaded green hydrogen initiatives in the country. Furthermore, the project is supported by more than 60 Namibian small and medium-sized enterprises, whose local expertise was essential to the construction of this state-of-the-art facility.

International collaboration has also been significant, with companies such as Peric Hydrogen Systems providing technical expertise in the system’s implementation. Industry experts Tony and Ma also helped ensure the project’s success.

Construction of the plant began in April 2024, and it was operational in less than a year. This achievement reflects the efficiency and dedication of local and international partners, as well as Namibia’s commitment to the global energy transition. The continued support of institutions such as the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action ( BMWK ) has also been a determining factor in the implementation of this pioneering project.
