CNOOC Limited has started production at Phase II of the Luda 5-2 North oilfield in the central part of the Bohai Sea. This development reinforces the company’s leadership in the development of offshore heavy oil and the application of thermal recovery technologies in super-heavy oil fields .
Strategic expansion in Bohai
The project is located in waters approximately 30 metres deep and incorporates a new auxiliary production platform along with a wellhead platform. In total, 29 wells are planned to be drilled , of which 28 will be for production and one will be a water source well, according to the World Oil portal.
Phase II of the project introduces innovations in jet pump injection and production, optimizing heavy oil extraction and improving operational efficiency. These technological improvements seek to maximize the performance and profitability of the field in the medium term.
Production and development at Luda 5-2 North
According to the company’s estimates, the field will reach its peak production in 2026, with approximately 6,700 barrels of oil equivalent per day . The entire project is operated by CNOOC Limited, which maintains a 100% working interest.
The development of this field strengthens the country’s energy supply capacity, aligning with the company’s strategic objectives in the exploration and production of offshore hydrocarbons . With this push, the company continues to consolidate its position as a leader in the global energy industry.
