Proteus Marine Renewables has made significant progress on its tidal energy project in Japan. Following the success of its AR500 model, the company has received the Design Assessment Conformity Certificate for its 1.1 MW Proteus AR1100 tidal turbine from Japanese certification agency ClassNK. This achievement allows progress to be made towards the installation of the turbine on the Goto Islands in early 2025.
Proteus tidal turbine ready for installation in 2025
The AR1100 system, which incorporates improvements to pitch and yaw mechanisms, promises to significantly increase performance in tidal power generation . Furthermore, its installation will be key to providing clean and sustainable energy to the region, aligning with Japan’s goals to increase the use of renewable sources.
The project is supported by key partners such as Kyuden Mirai Energy, the Japanese Ministry of Environment and local companies such as Toyo Construction, Goto Transportation and Shibuya Diving. The Certificate of Conformity validates the technical design and enables the submission of the construction permit , a crucial step to start construction and expand the existing land-based power plant.
The AR1100 turbine is scheduled for installation in 2025 , and the Proteus team sees this project as a major step towards the global adoption of tidal energy as a viable renewable energy source.
