R17 Electric: Renault and Ora Ïto revive the iconic “R17” with retro-futuristic electric design

The Renault company and the visionary designer Ora Ïto, have joined forces to bring to life an electric version of the classic“Renault 17” in their latest restomod project. This sports coupe, originally from the 1970s, has been revamped with a 270 hp electric motor.

The “R17 Electric” and its modern version

This is the fourth collaboration, in a series of Renault projects that explore its rich heritage, having previously reinterpreted iconic models such as the Renault 4 and the Renault 5. Now, the R17 electric restomod stands out for its modernized aesthetics and enhanced performance, stemming from the carbon fiber chassis and an all-electric powertrain. all-electric powertrain.. However, this model is not intended for mass production, but rather a one-off design that captures the essence of the brand.

This project is a reflection of the brand’s commitment to innovation, while preserving the spirit of its historic models. The Renault R17 was in its time an iconic car, and this new version pays tribute to its legacy, and carries it into the future.

The exterior design of the R17 has been carefully tuned by Ora Ïto, who has added a second skin to improve aerodynamics and give the car“a more fluid and modern look“. The car has been stretched by 17 cm, improving its stability on the road. In addition, the model adds stylized LED headlights, under a rear lighting system of a single continuous strip, adding a futuristic touch to its design.

The innovative interior design of the R17

A main aspect of the designers, was to maintain the original lines, but with improvements in the construction materials. In addition, the seats were redesigned with high quality fabrics such as“Merino Wool” and“Wool Bouclé“, achieving a mix between classic and contemporary. The instrument panel now integrates geometric digital displays that reinterpret the original dials of the R17, maintaining the spirit of the era, but with current technology.

The electric R17 restomod x Ora is a celebration of Renault’s history, and will be presented at events such as the Concours de Chantilly Arts & Elegance Richard Mille, as well as being displayed at the Paris Motor Show in October 2024.
