Earl Crochet, a well-known figure in the terminal industry, discussed his presentation, “Common Sense, Not So Common,” delivered at the International Liquid Terminals Association (ILTA) conference. Crochet gave to the Inspenet team a few words about his session focused on the importance of applying critical thinking and common sense in everyday terminal operations.
From Seven Firewatchers to Franken Tanks: Crochet’s Stories Expose Operational Oversights
Crochet’s talk wasn’t filled with technical jargon or graphs. Instead, it was a collection of real-world stories he’s encountered throughout his career that showcased situations where a lack of common sense led to problems. From having seven firewatchers for a single welder to encountering a “Franken tank” constructed from hundreds of tiny steel pieces, Crochet’s anecdotes highlighted the need for a thoughtful approach to terminal operations.
“The title of my talk was ‘Common Sense, Not So Common’ because I wanted to remind people that sometimes the simplest solutions are the best,” said Crochet. “By using critical thinking and avoiding unnecessary complexity, we can ensure the safety and efficiency of our terminals.”
Crochet is a regular attendee at industry conferences and will be returning to ILTA next year. He can also be found at other industry events throughout the year.
