Bimco ‘s latest video “Ship recycling: It’s time to change” collects images recorded in the Alang shipyards (India) and continues with a visit to Chattogram and Dhaka (Bangladesh) at the beginning of May with the purpose of discussing the ratification of the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships. Bimco hopes to raise awareness among regulators, shipowners and the general public about the benefits of safe and environmentally friendly ship recycling.

“The figures speak for themselves. Raw steel scrap from ship recycling feeds some 350 re-rolling mills that supply about 50% of annual steel consumption in Bangladesh alone, and the industry creates thousands of jobs to for people to support their families,” said David Loosley, Bimco’s general secretary and chief executive officer.

“But ship recycling has for too long been unsafe for workers and the environment in shipyards that do not meet the standards of the Hong Kong Convention. It is time for change and for ship recycling to be done right,” Loosley pointed out.

Bimco: More than 15,000 ships will be recycled in the next decade

According to Bimco estimates, in the next ten years more than 15,000 ships will be recycled, more than double the number in the last ten years, partly due to the stricter regulations on greenhouse gases that the naval sector faces.

This year opens an opportunity for the Hong Kong Convention to enter into force, which could change the face of the recycling industry forever. It should be recalled that Bimco and other agencies’ trip to Bangladesh in May met with some success, as the Bangladeshi government committed to ratifying the Hong Kong Convention this year.
