NTPC has defined its plans to increase its coal production, among the blocks allocated by the State, by approximately 16% for the 2024 – 2025 period, with the objective of meeting the country’s increasing energy demand.
Increase coal capacity and production
In order to contribute to the supply of its energy needs, NTPC aims to achieve an output of 40 million tons of coal, compared to 34.38 million tons in previous years. This increase in production is intended to cover 15% of its estimated fuel needs.
The initiative to expand the extraction of coal from the so-called captive blocks is part of a broader strategy to boost domestic coal production and reduce imports. NTPC has indicated that this growth will be supported by the implementation of various approaches and technologies, including improved mine planning and automation.
In the past years 2022 and 2023, NTPC and its partners imported approximately 16.5 million tons of coal, a figure that decreased to 10.5 million tons between 2023 and 2024. This increase in individual production capacity helps the country’s objectives of strengthening local production and satisfying its demands. India’s thermal coal imports stood at 14.69 million tons in February, up from 10.28 million tons in the previous year.
NTPC’s 2025 target
NTPC is responsible for a quarter of India’s electricity demand, having produced 422 TWh in 2023 and 2024, an increase of 6% over the previous fiscal year. The company plans to expand its generation capacity by 5GW in the current year, following an addition of 3.9GW in 2023 and 2024, for a total capacity of approximately 76GW.
Of the new capacity proposed for 2024 and 2025, 60% will be based on renewable energy, with the remainder corresponding to thermal energy. NTPC’s current renewable energy operating capacity is 3.5GW.
The goal of India’s NTPC is to raise its non-fossil energy capacity to 45-50% of its generation portfolio by 2032, with a planned renewable energy capacity of 60GW of the projected 130GW in total. The company currently has more than 20GW of renewable energy projects under development.
