The global knowledge network for professionals in the energy and industry

The evolution of Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) is no longer limited to detecting discontinuities in materials. Today, industries require platforms capable of transforming large volumes of data into actionable insights that help predict failures, optimize maintenance, and extend asset life. In this context, MISTRAS Group has developed a strategy that integrates inspection technologies, continuous monitoring, specialized software, and data analytics to deliver comprehensive asset integrity solutions for critical industrial sectors.

With operations across North America, Europe, and South America, MISTRAS serves industries including oil and gas, power generation, infrastructure, manufacturing, and aerospace. Its portfolio combines advanced inspection, condition monitoring, specialized engineering, and digital platforms that centralize asset information to support data-driven decision-making.

From Conventional Inspection to Asset Intelligence

During an interview, one of MISTRAS' executives explained how the company has evolved from its origins in non-destructive testing to a broader operational intelligence approach. After joining the company following an acquisition in 2003, he highlighted that MISTRAS' growth has been driven by both international expansion and the development of proprietary technologies.

According to the executive, the company's objective is no longer limited to performing inspections. Instead, it focuses on providing actionable information that enables operators to understand the actual condition of their assets and respond quickly. This strategy addresses the industry's growing demand for solutions that combine inspection, monitoring, and predictive analytics within a single platform.

Proprietary Technologies for More Efficient Inspections

Among the company's key technological developments are acoustic emission systems, robotic pipeline inspection equipment, and tools capable of evaluating 100% of a pipeline's surface (both internally and externally) at higher speeds than traditional inspection methods. These technologies were developed to address specific customer needs while improving field inspection efficiency.

In addition, MISTRAS continues to expand its capabilities through technologies focused on data acquisition and management, providing a comprehensive view of industrial asset conditions while supporting condition-based maintenance strategies.

Continuous Monitoring for Wind Turbines

One of the examples presented during the interview highlighted the use of acoustic emission technology in wind turbines. Originally applied to infrastructure such as bridges, this technology has been adapted by installing sensors inside turbine blades, where they remain protected from environmental conditions.

The system enables continuous 24/7 monitoring to detect defects such as cracks, delamination, leading-edge erosion, and other degradation mechanisms. The resulting data helps classify damage and supports maintenance planning before more significant failures occur.

PCMS: Software Developed with User Input

Another key component of MISTRAS' technology strategy is PCMS (Plant Condition Management Software), an asset integrity management platform whose evolution has been guided directly by its users.

During the interview, it was explained that the software, originally developed several decades ago and later incorporated into MISTRAS, currently supports inspection operations at more than 50% of U.S. refineries and is used across five continents. Unlike many platforms primarily designed for executive management, PCMS prioritizes the needs of inspectors, engineers, and operators who rely on the system every day. Annual enhancements are based directly on recommendations from a dedicated group of experienced users, allowing the platform to continuously evolve according to real-world industry requirements.

A Data-Driven Strategy for Asset Integrity

MISTRAS combines non-destructive testing, continuous monitoring, specialized engineering, and digital platforms to provide a comprehensive view of industrial asset performance. This integrated approach helps operators reduce risk, extend the service life of critical equipment, and improve operational reliability through decisions supported by real-time data.
