Tech giant Meta has announced a new step toward energy sustainability and artificial intelligence (AI) innovation. The company will launch a request for proposals (RFP) to identify nuclear power developers capable of generating 1-4 gigawatts (GW) of new nuclear generating capacity in the United States , a crucial step toward meeting its AI and sustainability goals.

Nuclear energy: Key to Meta’s energy future

Meta has recognized that nuclear power will play an essential role in the transition to a more reliable and sustainable electrical grid . The growing demand for energy to power its data centers , where it operates much of its technological infrastructure, has driven the need to find additional, cleaner, and solid-base energy sources.

The company says in its statement that to move towards a more sustainable future, it needs reliable and clean energy sources that can support the growth of its operations and contribute to the decarbonization of the industry.

Through the RFP, Meta is seeking to partner with nuclear power developers that will help meet the company’s energy needs and promote the adoption of clean energy technologies on a larger scale. The company anticipates that this nuclear capacity will come online beginning early in the next decade , helping to diversify energy sources and reduce the carbon footprint of the technology industry.

By working with top nuclear power developers, the company could ensure long-term thinking and accelerate the availability of nuclear generators that reduce costs and improve sustainability .

Meta continues to advance its commitment to sustainability

This new commitment is part of Meta’s ongoing efforts to operate with 100% renewable energy , a goal it has been pursuing since 2020. The company has also been a pioneer in supporting renewable energy projects, including solar, wind and battery storage . Currently, the company has signed renewable energy contracts for more than 12,000 MW globally .

Meta is convinced that the expansion of nuclear technologies, together with its investments in other forms of renewable energy , is essential to ensure that the future of energy is sustainable and reliable.
