Boston Dynamics has improved the capabilities of its robot dog Spot

Boston Dynamics has released major updates to its popular robot dog Spot , elevating its capabilities in industrial settings. The quadruped robot , known for its versatility, can now detect leaks and perform equipment checks with greater accuracy . Thanks to its new operating system, Spot has improved its ability to navigate obstacles and execute more complex autonomous missions.

One highlight of the update is the ability to restrict the robot’s access to certain areas using “No Stair Mode,” according to Interesting Engineering. This feature is especially useful in installations where you want to limit Spot ‘s movement in specific areas.

Robot dog Spot has a laser scanner

One of the most important new features is the integration of the Leica BLK ARC laser scanner, which allows Spot to perform 3D scanning missions autonomously . These missions generate 3D point clouds, improving quality control and inspection in industrial infrastructures .

Additionally, Boston Dynamics has collaborated with Fluke to mount the SV600 sensor on the robot ’s body. This specialized sensor can detect acoustic vibrations, allowing facilities to perform predictive monitoring and avoid costly downtime.

Another significant improvement is the incorporation of multiple docking stations into Spot’s missions. This allows the robot to navigate large facilities, automatically recharge and continue its mission without human intervention, extending its operating range.

What else can the Spot robot do?

Spot has also improved its ability to avoid obstacles using the Long Range Planner, an experimental feature that allows the robot to deviate up to 6 meters if it detects blockages on its predefined path. This represents an improvement on the previous range of just 1.5 meters, ensuring greater flexibility in complex environments.

Without a doubt, Boston Dynamics continues to position Spot as a key tool for industrial maintenance and automation , integrating new functions that facilitate failure prevention and increase operational efficiency.
