From Houston, Texas during the ASNT 2023 annual conferenceRichard Blaser from Inspenet had the pleasure of interviewing Yanik Siegwart, sales manager of MFE Inspection Solutions, who presented an innovation that could revolutionize the world of inspections: a drone specially designed for non-destructive analysis.

A Drone with a Difference

At a glance, MFE’s drone is unlike any other. “It comes from research,” says Yanik, noting that what is special about this drone lies not only in its technological capabilities, but also in its design. Unlike other drones that tilt forward to propel themselves, this model was redesigned from the ground up, allowing it to tilt its arms, giving it omnidirectional capabilities and more versatile interaction.

Integrated Technology

It’s not just a drone, it’s a complete inspection solution. It is equipped with several sensors, which were previously operated manually, allowing nondestructive analysis on steel, coatings, and more. All, without the need for a person to physically get up there to take measurements. “It’s much faster, easier and safer to use the drone,” Yanik comments.

Subscription Model: Always on the Cutting Edge

MFE has opted for an unconventional business model: subscription. For an annual cost of approximately $90,000, customers have access to the drone with the most up-to-date technology. This model includes pilot training and insurance, ensuring that the customer is always using the latest in inspection technology.

Materials and Construction

With a carbon fiber main structure and additional components manufactured with a special HP 3D printer, the drone is designed to be robust and adaptable.

The Future of Inspections

The potential of this drone is immense. From inspections in tanks and tall structures to locations with difficult access, it promises to be an indispensable tool in the NDT world.
