From Houston, Texas during the ASNT 2023 annual conference, Richard Blaser from Inspenet had the pleasure of interviewing John W. Newman, President and CTO of Laser Technology, Inc. a company with a 35-year history at the forefront of non-destructive testing (NDT) and a leader in laser-based technology innovation.

Leading with Laser-Based NDT

We specialize in laser-based NDT using Laser Shearography, a type of laser imaging interferometer,” John explains. This advanced method is capable of detecting hidden defects beneath the surface of materials, a critical technology for structural integrity in a variety of fields.

Shearography in Action

During the demonstration, John illuminated a wing part from a Harrier Jet, a vertical takeoff aircraft, revealing through the shearography camera two areas of impact damage that would otherwise have remained hidden. “It is widely used by NASA for rocket engine testing and now for the Gateway space station,” adds John, highlighting the importance of his technology in large-scale projects.

Undetectable to the naked eye

What makes shearography indispensable is its ability to reveal damage that is invisible to the human eye, something that conventional visual inspections cannot detect, especially in composite materials.

Ease of Use and Versatility

John claims that his systems are simple to set up and operate, offering full training for use on both robots and scanner tripods. In addition, he presented a range of portable products intended for aircraft and ship inspection, highlighting the wide variety of applications for his solutions.
