During its participation in AMPP 2024, Jerry Brown, President of Brown Corrosion Services, Inc., highlighted his company’s distinctive approach in the corrosion protection industry, as well as one of the most critical cases he has witnessed in his over 50-year career.
An approach based on adaptability and customer relations
Founded in 1995, Brown Corrosion Services has built its reputation in the industry thanks to its ability to adapt to different environments and understand the specific needs of each client. The Houston, Texas-based company specializes in cathodic protection, corrosion control, and material monitoring, with key projects in Brunei, Malaysia, Nigeria, and the U.S.
We are culturally sensitive, so if we go to a country in Africa or Latin America we don’t cause a problem. […] And that’s part of the problem, if you can develop a relationship with some people in a company then you both can get the job done correctly.
Jerry Brown.
The company not only specializes in corrosion prevention but in early detection using advanced technologies. Currently, it is collaborating with partners in Lithuania on bacteria detection, a key factor in the deterioration of critical infrastructure.
Matagorda Bay: A severe corrosion case
During the interview, Brown also shared an alarming case that underscores the importance of corrosion protection. In Matagorda Bay, Texas, a wellhead in the Gulf of Mexico suffered such severe corrosion that it could not be salvaged.
The worst case of corrosion I’ve ever seen is right here in the United States, and there’s a picture behind you right there of a typical wellhead in Matagorda Bay just over in South Texas on in the Gulf of Mexico.
Jerry Brown.
In the United States, the Department of Transportation is responsible for all pipelines and things of that nature, and they said there has to be cathodic protection put on that wellhead even though it’s not producing. And in our country to abandon a well you don’t just walk away, you’re looking at having to bring a drilling rig in, go down into the hole, fill it with cement, make sure it’s safe for future generations.
Jerry Brown.
