A robot for railroad maintenance. How does it work?

Mounted on a construction vehicle, the robot can operate at heights of up to 12 meters using its two interchangeable, multifunctional arms. With a load capacity of up to 40 kg, it can be equipped with tools such as chainsaws, brushes and even paintbrushes, thus adapting to various maintenance tasks ranging from pruning tree branches to applying paint to metal structures. metal structures that support cables on the trains.

The operation of the robot is carried out from inside the construction vehicle by a system controlled by a worker equipped with glasses that transmit images from the robot’s camera. . This allows the operator to manipulate the robot with precision, sensing the weight and resistance of the objects being handled.

Labor reduction

The introduction of this humanoid robot could reduce the need for labor by up to 30%, according to JR West. The company is considering expanding the use of the robot and potentially marketing it to other companies, evaluating its effectiveness in various applications.
