The incident occurred last Tuesday, July 9, 2024, when CMA CGM “Benjamin Franklin”, sailing from Asia to Europe, encountered adverse weather conditions off the coast of South Africa. This event resulted in the loss at sea of 44 containers and damage to another 30 containers on board the vessel.

The CMA CGM containers went missing

On the other hand, it is relevant to mention that there were no injuries among the crew members, no environmental pollution, and no damage to the structure of the vessel, which continues to be fully operational and safe for navigation. The inspections inspections confirmed that the submerged containers contained exclusively “non-hazardous cargo”.

In addition, the company acted promptly in informing the appropriate authorities about the incident. The ship is now on its way to Cape Town, where a detailed damage assessment will be carried out and the necessary measures will be put in place to secure the vessel until it reaches its destination.

Finally, CMA CGM has initiated individual communications with the affected customers to inform them about the incident and coordinate the actions to be taken, ensuring the necessary support during this incident and all its mishaps.
