The U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission(NRC) has cut the deadlines for reviewing the construction permit application for the Natrium reactor, developed by TerraPower.
The new schedule for the Natrium reactor
The primary goal was originally scheduled for 26 months, where the evaluation of the application was adjusted to 19 months, with a target date set for December 31, 2025.
Executive orders signed by President Trump in May 2025 made it easier to streamline approval processes. This support translates into a direct endorsement of the Department of Energy’s Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program(ARDP), in which the Natrium plant is the leading star.
The Natrium reactor design includes a sodium reactor design includes a sodium cooling system and molten salt thermal storage. This configuration allows a base capacity of 345 MW and a flexible expansion up to 500 MW, offering an agile solution to peak demand.
The energy company was the first to formally file an application for an advanced commercial reactor with the NRC in 2024. Through this pioneering effort and ongoing collaboration with the regulators, the Kemmerer Unit 1 project project has entered the partial construction phase, with approval of essential components such as the energy storage section.
