The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has approved the Construction and Operations Plan for the SouthCoast Wind Project , marking a key milestone in the development of renewable energy in the United States. The project will generate up to 2.4 gigawatts of offshore wind energy , enough to power 840,000 homes in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

About the SouthCoast Wind project

The wind farm will be located more than 30 nautical miles south of Martha’s Vineyard and 20 miles south of Nantucket, cementing the region as an epicenter of the transition to a sustainable electric grid . It will feature up to 141 wind turbines and five offshore substation platforms , as well as export cables designed to minimize environmental impact.

The approval of this project is part of the Biden-Harris administration’s strategy to reach 19 gigawatts of offshore wind capacity. Elizabeth Klein, director of BOEM, highlighted that these types of initiatives combat climate change and boost economic growth and the creation of well-paid jobs in sectors such as shipbuilding and component manufacturing.

It is important to mention that BOEM has worked in collaboration with tribal nations, fishing communities and ocean users to ensure that the project complies with strict environmental mitigation measures. Turbine positions in sensitive areas were eliminated to preserve critical marine life habitats.
