The company RWE , one of the main references in the expansion of renewable energies in Spain, is moving towards the modernization of the Muel wind farm , in the Aragon region. This project is a good example of companies that are seeking to maximize energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact.
The repowering of the Muel wind farm
The Muel wind farm has been in operation for over 26 years and will undergo a comprehensive renovation process. This project begins with the removal of the existing 27 turbines, with a combined capacity of 16.2 MW, to be replaced by three state-of-the-art turbines, each with a capacity of 6.6 MW, reaching a total of 19.8 MW. In addition, construction of these new facilities will begin in the spring of 2025, with the expectation that they will be fully operational by the end of that same year.
With a recovery plan backed by the European Union, Spain aims to reach 20 GW of wind capacity by 2030. The repowering of existing wind farms, such as the Muel park, will be very important to achieve this goal.
This project has received funding from the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Facility, a key boost to the region’s energy transition. RWE highlights that the modernisation of wind farms increases the production of clean energy, while contributing to the reduction of the land footprint, making the most of the available space.
Through its renewable energy unit in the Iberian Peninsula, it continues to advance in the consolidation of a more efficient energy infrastructure that is less dependent on fossil fuels. The company currently operates 18 wind farms and 7 solar plants in the Iberian Peninsula, contributing to the generation of renewable energy in Spain.
