The British company Sonatest, a leader in ultrasonic inspection technologies, once again participated in the ASNT Annual Conference 2025 to present its latest advances in non-destructive testing (NDT), consolidating its expertise in conventional and phased array ultrasound solutions.

Ultrasonic inspection and artificial intelligence

During the event, Renato Nogueira, Applications Specialist at Sonatest, mentioned that the introduction of TFMI (Total Focusing Method Imaging), an advanced technique that integrates up to four propagation modes to generate a single high-precision image.

This innovation allows inspectors to perform more reliable evaluations based on images and not only on amplitudes.

Nogueira explained.

Sonatest also introduced its new API Integration feature available on the WAVE line of ultrasonic instruments. This feature allows customers to access raw A-scan data and integrate it with custom applications, robotic arms or automated reporting systems.

With this technological opening, users can automate manual inspections and adapt the equipment to their specific needs.

Nogueira detailed.

On the other hand, the company was consulted about the role of artificial intelligence in inspection processes, where Nogueira pointed out that Sonatest is working on the development of tools based on AI-based tools for the detection and evaluation of defects.

However, this development is in the early stages, which the company anticipates will transform the way inspectors interpret results. “The process requires standardization and a significant learning curve, but it will undoubtedly shape the future of inspection,” he commented.

Among the hardware innovations, Sonatest presented the Wheel Probe 2, a 128-element transducer designed for corrosion mapping and composite inspection, which offers greater coverage and efficiency in complete operations.

The company launched at ASNT a magnetic roller specially designed for carbon steel inspection, allowing direct adherence to pipes and faster and safer test execution.

For Sonatest, sustainability is closely linked to industrial safety. “Every improvement in our equipment and processes helps inspectors do their job better, prevent accidents and protect lives,” Nogueira highlighted, demonstrating the ethical and social purpose behind the company’s technological innovation.
