The need to transition to new fuels will create challenges and opportunities for fleet managers that are very different from those facing the domestic vehicle industry. With batteries capable of driving large vehicles for long distances still under development; fleet managers will need to find the right mix of alternative fuels for their organization’s needs.
In fact, by the year 2040, the fleet industry could be transformed almost beyond current recognition. And it is that; by that year, the number of cars on the road will double to two billion and all smaller vehicles; could migrate to electric power. In contrast, the largest long-haul transportation will shift to low-emission, renewable fuels.
Against this backdrop, Shell’s Future of Fleet survey found that 53% of fleet administrators or managers expect to adopt new fuel types over the next five years and 64% of them opted for electric or hybrid not only compared to other types of alternative fuel; but also with preference to diesel and gasoline.
Likewise, the results showed that fleet managers consider that the big changes that the next respondents see are the adoption of new types of fuel (53%); the introduction of new technologies (48%) and the advent of new types of vehicles (47%).
According to Paola López, Senior Marketing Manager of Shell Mexico; automation is part of this transformation that will change the way fleets operate. Already today the monitoring systems in the vehicle (IVMS); provide Fleet Managers with data on vehicle and driver behavior that can help improve driver comfort, efficiency and safety. By helping drivers improve their driving habits, you can also reduce fuel consumption.
“As a result, we are seeing many new collaborations between organizations looking to share advice and develop common standards. Looking for partners outside of your immediate sector, such as technology, energy infrastructure, or consultancy, can help test ideas and identify best practices,” López explained.
