The self-elevating platform (SEP) Fugro’s Amberjack has been deployed in Japan to meet the growing demand for geotechnical services in the Japanese offshore wind sector. This move responds to local regulations that expedite the deployment of registered vessels in the country, facilitating the rapid mobilization and delivery of geographic data crucial to the developing industry.

Reflagged in December 2023, Amberjack is based in Tokyo and will be used on wind farm projects in Japan, offering services such as geotechnical drilling , high-quality sampling and various on-site tests, including downhole tests, cone penetration tests (CPT) and standard penetration tests (SPT).

In addition to its core capabilities, Fugro’s Amberjack provides downhole geophysical logging for preliminary and detailed geotechnical studies, as well as cable route studies.

All these functions comply with international and Japanese standards, reaching a maximum water depth of 42 meters. This deployment strategy responds to the Japanese government’s ambitious goal of achieving an offshore wind capacity of 10 GW by 2030 and 30 to 45 GW by 2040, thus strengthening the contribution of renewable energies to the national energy mix.

Accelerating the Energy Transition

Junichi Kuwamura, Country Manager of Fugro in Japan, highlighted that “this action contributes to accelerating the development of Japanese offshore wind farms, thus supporting the country’s energy transition towards renewable sources.” Fugro is proud to play a crucial role in this process, offering high-quality geographic data solutions that are critical to the sustainable advancement of the offshore wind industry in Japan.

Expanding infrastructure for offshore wind development in Japan not only brings economic and environmental benefits, but also presents unique challenges in terms of engineering and logistics. As the country embarks on the construction of large-scale offshore wind farms, it will be essential to implement innovative strategies to ensure operational efficiency and environmental safety at all stages of the process , from initial deployment to continued operation.
