The ModalAI company has launched its latest innovations and development advances on the market: The Starling 2 and Starling 2 Max drone models. These improved versions allow new functionality and offer better performance in their capabilities.
The new versions of the Starling 2 drones
The Starling 2 model has a lightweight design of 280 grams, which integrates up to five image sensors, allowing more than 40 minutes of visual flight indoors. In addition, the Starling 2 Max drone , weighing 500 grams, was designed to carry out the most demanding outdoor operations, with more than 55 minutes of flight autonomy and the ability to carry up to an additional 500 grams.
Both designs comply with National Defense Authorization Act ( NDAA ) regulations and are equipped with professional image sensor systems, which facilitate precise navigation both indoors and outdoors, setting new standards in flight times for the VOXL 2 series.
ModalAI CEO Chad Sweet highlighted the rapid integration of the VOXL SDK development software and VOXL 2 system with the company’s ecosystem of advanced components. “The Starling 2 and Starling 2 Max models represent the next generation of our VOXL 2 drones, designed to elevate the industry’s autonomous capabilities to a new level, completely manufactured in the United States“Sweet stated.
Features and regulatory compliance
Both models are designed under strict criteria in compliance with SWAP and NDAA regulations , complying with Section 848 of the NDAA ’20. The Starling 2 design is ideal for indoor flights, while the Starling 2 Max is suitable for long-distance outdoor navigation operations , with the capacity to carry additional loads.
Starling drones benefit from the VOXL 2 system, an automatic software that supports up to 15 TOPS of AI processing, provided by the 8-core Qualcomm® QRB5165 processor. Additionally, they are equipped with multiple sensors, including TDK® IMUs and barometers, GPS, and WiFi connectivity, under certified assembly in the United States.
The VOXL SDK provides Starling 2 and Starling 2 Max with capabilities such as visual inertial odometry, obstacle avoidance, 3D mapping and path planning, along with object detection and classification algorithms based on TensorFlow Lite neural networks. This development kit provides an extensive library of documentation and tutorials to facilitate developers in their work.
