Lockheed Martin is preparing to launch the LM 400 satellite, demonstrating key new space technologies for military, commercial, and civilian missions.

On March 15, 2025, Lockheed Martin will launch its LM 400 technology demonstration satellite . This self-funded mission aims to validate new capabilities in orbit, representing an important demonstration of the maturity of the technologies developed by the aerospace giant.

The LM 400 satellite: innovation and orbital versatility

The LM 400 is a medium-sized spacecraft designed to perform space missions in various orbits, from low Earth orbit (LEO) to geosynchronous orbit (GEO). The satellite’s primary function is to validate new technologies that will facilitate future missions for commercial, military, and civilian customers.

Its flexibility and ability to carry high-power payloads make it an ideal platform for communications, radar, imaging, and remote sensing missions.

A joint effort with Firefly Aerospace

The launch is scheduled to take place on Firefly Aerospace’s Alpha FLTA006 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base. The launch window will be 52 minutes. starting at 6:25 am PST , and will be broadcast live on Firefly.

This collaboration underscores Lockheed Martin’s ability to conduct in-space technology demonstrations and also the company’s commitment to private space launches.

SmartSat technology is key to the mission

One of the key innovations to be tested during this mission will be the SmartSat software, developed by Lockheed Martin. This system is designed to more efficiently manage satellite operations , improving their autonomy and ability to adapt to different missions in diverse orbits.

During the approximately 30-day mission, initialization, operational, and controlled deorbit tests will be conducted, evaluating how the hardware and software interact in real time.
