Lanzo Batteries, an innovative spin-off of the Centro de Investigación Tecnológica en Electroquímica (Cidetec), is ready to validate its new aerospace battery technology. In June 2025, the launch will take place from the renowned U.S. space activity center, Cape Canaveral, using a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

Lanzo Batteries and innovation in space

This mission aims to integrate the high power density modular battery Lanzo’s high power density modular battery into UARX Space‘s Orbital Transfer Vehicle platform, known as Ossie, which will serve as a testbed for various experiments.

The mission will reach an altitude of 500 to 600 km and will remain in orbit for at least six months, with the possibility of extending up to two years, depending on the results obtained. During this period, both the batteries and the battery management system(BMS) will be monitored to evaluate their performance in the space environment. This on-orbit test will verify all the characteristics of the battery, which will provide backup power five times a day and will be activated every three Earth revolutions.

A vital aspect of this project is the use of commercial components in Lanzo’s batteries. The objective is to ensure that there is no decrease in performance over its lifetime under the environmental conditions of the space. The functionality and reliability of the system will be thoroughly evaluated, thus validating the company’s ability to safely maintain flight elements.
