Last May 15 was the christening of the plug-in hybrid vessel Electramar of AtoB@C Shipping, a subsidiary of the Finnish shipping company ESL Shipping. This marked a historic moment in Helsinki, Finland. The ceremony was attended by customers, stakeholders and employees.
Under this context, Paula Ojala, chartering director of the multinational steel company SSAB and godmother of the vessel, expressed her honor to be part of this project. “The collaboration between SSAB, ESL Shipping and AtoB@C Shipping spans decades, and to participate as godmother of this highly energy efficient vessel is a true honor.“, he shared.
For his part, Mikki Koskinen, CEO of ESL Shipping and president of AtoB@C Shipping AB, commented on the move into a new era for steel and shipping. “We are witnessing a shift towards the use of non-fossil fuels, and are excited that a pioneer in sustainable steel production such as SSAB is represented in this initiative.“said Koskinen.
Electramar: efficient plug-in hybrid ship
Electramar represents a significant advance in the reduction of the maritime carbon footprint, managing to reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 50% compared to traditional vessels. This is due to its ability to connect to shore power systems, its large battery and improved charging efficiency. In addition, its design allows for quieter and cleaner operation in port and it is capable of carrying a variety of cargoes, from steel to fertilizers and forestry products.
Finally, the Electramar’s sister ship, the Stellamar, is on a voyage from India to Europe, crossing the Cape of Good Hope. Meanwhile, the start of production of the Fleximar, the ninth unit in this series, was celebrated in April with a steel cutting ceremony. In the following video you can see both specimens.
