The advances in robotics are reaching new heights, literally, with the development of the iRonCub3, the first humanoid capable of flight thanks to jet propulsion. This creation, the brainchild of the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT), is designed to push the boundaries of robotic science and transform the way disaster relief operations are conducted.
The iRonCub3 is equipped with four compact jet engines and has the ability to fly, a feature that could be crucial in scenarios where time is of the essence to save lives. Unlike traditional methods, this robot could access hard-to-reach areas and perform real-time assessments, something no current technology can offer with such versatility.

Process and progress of the humanoid iRonCub3
The iRonCub project has been a technological adventure since its inception in 2021. Throughout its development, the IIT team has faced notable technical challenges, such as preventing the jet engines from overheating the robot, putting its structural integrity at risk. These challenges have led to significant modifications to the design of the iCubthe base platform on which the iRonCub is built.
In its third version (the iRonCub3) has introduced significant improvements, such as the integration of state-of-the-art sensors and the elimination of tendons, which improves its flight capability and endurance.
Likewise, the IIT team has developed sophisticated control algorithms to manage the attitude and position of the robot during flight, ensuring that it remains stable and efficient in its mission. In addition, the iRonCub3’s turbines generate a thrust of more than 1000 N, with exhaust temperatures exceeding 600 degrees Celsius, which requires extreme precision in the thermodynamic and aerodynamic control of the robot.
With the iRonCub3, IIT has created a robot capable of flight and has opened a door to a future where robots can fly. robots humanoid robots can play a crucial role in rescue operations.
