The Port of Gothenburg has taken a major step towards sustainability with the opening of its first hydrogen refuelling station for trucks and heavy vehicles . Strategically located next to Gate 6, one of the busiest entrances to the port and the country, the station is designed to supply green hydrogen , driving the transition to cleaner transport.
About the new hydrogen station
The new station, managed by the company Hydri , has the capacity to supply up to 1,500 kg of hydrogen per day , enough to supply approximately 35 trucks. The hydrogen used is 100% ecological, which reinforces the port’s commitment to carbon neutrality in the heavy transport sector. According to Michel Thomas, CEO of Qarlbo Energy and president of Hydri, this project is essential to move towards carbon-neutral transport.
It is important to mention that this infrastructure is partially funded by the Swedish Energy Agency, which has supported projects that facilitate the expansion of the hydrogen network in Sweden. Hydri plans to continue building other refueling stations, with the aim of reaching around 20 stations during 2024 and 2025 .
Strategic location at gate 6
The station’s location at Gate 6 of the Port of Gothenburg is no coincidence. This area sees 400,000 heavy vehicle passages per year , making it a strategic point to ensure that trucks entering and leaving the port can easily access clean fuels . In addition, with the future relocation of Stena Line’s terminals to the Arendal area, west of the RoRo terminal, traffic is expected to increase, which will increase the demand for sustainable solutions.
Viktor Allgurén, Head of Innovation at the Port of Gothenburg, highlighted the importance of this new station as part of the infrastructure needed for the transition to emission-free transport . Together with the nearby electric charging stations, the port is fully prepared for more sustainable landside logistics.
Impact on logistics at the Port of Gothenburg
The Port of Gothenburg is one of the most important logistics centres in Northern Europe and with this new hydrogen station, it is taking a major step towards reducing emissions in land transport . Green hydrogen offers an efficient and clean alternative for heavy vehicles that need to cover long distances without the long recharging times required by electric vehicles .
This initiative is just the beginning of a broader transformation at the port, which seeks to be a leader in sustainable energy solutions and move towards a cleaner future in transport.
