ENGIE Chile ‘s Tamaya BESS energy storage system has received authorization from the National Electric Coordinator to officially begin operations, and to convert an old diesel power plant into a clean energy hub.
From diesel power plant to clean energy storage system
BESS Tamaya, with a capacity of 68 MW/418 MWh, is designed to store the energy generated by the Tamaya Solar Plant ( 114 MWac ) and release it to the National Electric System in times of high demand, and is located in Tocopilla, Antofagasta region. The initiative is aligned with ENGIE Chile’s commitment to promote the use of renewable energy and improve the flexibility of the national electricity system.
Our mission is to generate a positive impact on people and the planet and in line with this, BESS Tamaya represents a great step in our transformation plan.
Rosaline Corinthien, CEO of ENGIE Chile.
The project will reduce CO₂ emissions by 42,187 tons per year, which is equivalent to removing approximately 14,500 internal combustion vehicles from circulation. In addition, BESS Tamaya has the capacity to supply clean energy to 50,800 Chilean homes during the five hours of highest demand per day.
This project is part of a broader energy storage strategy of the company. Recently, in March 2024, the company put into operation BESS Coya ( 139 MW/638 MWh ) and is currently advancing in the construction of BESS Tocopilla ( 116 MW/660 MWh ) and BESS Capricornio ( 48 MW/264 MWh ). When these initiatives come into operation, ENGIE Chile will have a total capacity of 2 GWh in storage systems.
We continue to work and push to advance towards a cleaner and more sustainable future through innovative technological solutions, such as storage.
