ENGIE Chile has started the battery installation phase of the BESS Arica project, a large-scale energy storage system that connects directly to the National Electric System(SEN). This project, located in the region of Arica and Parinacota, aims to improve the flexibility and stability of the electricity system, especially in a strategic area such as the extreme north of Chile.

The technological installation in the BESS Arica project

The BESS Arica project will have an installed capacity of 34 MW and 170 MWh of storage. It is estimated that it will be able to supply energy equivalent to the consumption of more than 18,000 homes for five continuous hours, once it starts operations. By storing energy during periods of high availability and releasing it at times of peak demand, the system will contribute to the resilience of the national electricity system.

The initiative, which is part of ENGIE Chile’s strategy to strengthen the SEN, includes the installation of 36 lithium-ion battery containers and 9 conversion modules(MVS), using state-of-the-art technology to optimize resources and reuse existing infrastructure. The direct connection to the Arica Substation will reduce execution times and improve the operational efficiency of the project, while strengthening the local power supply.

From Arica we are promoting infrastructure that strengthens the operation of the SEN, and this initiative reflects how we apply cutting-edge technology, reuse existing infrastructure and develop projects that bring real value to the communities where we operate.

We are convinced that storage is a key part of accelerating the energy transition in the country.

The project has an investment of US$51 million, and is advancing in its battery assembly phase, following the completion of earthworks, civil works and site preparation. The BESS Arica development is part of the transformation roadmap that ENGIE Chile has been developing. ENGIE Chile is implementing at the national level, where the development of large-scale energy storage systems plays a central role in strengthening the country’s energy infrastructure.
