China’s largest offshore solar park , an ambitious 1-gigawatt offshore PV project by CHN Energy, is located 8 kilometers off the coast of Dongying, Shandong Province. The project has started generating power following the successful connection of its first solar units to the grid . Covering 1,223 hectares and with 2,934 installed PV platforms, this solar power plant is the largest of its kind in the world and marks a significant step forward in the country’s energy transition.

A model for the future of renewable energy

Developed by Guohua Energy Investment Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of CHN Energy, the project has a total installed capacity of 1 gigawatt , enough to supply electricity to 2.6 million people per year. This achievement contributes to China’s efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060 and sets a new standard in the renewable energy industry.

The solar facility is unique for its integrated development approach, combining clean energy generation with fish farming. This model optimizes the use of marine space, turning the plant into a sustainable energy source and a hub for aquaculture, maximizing the efficiency of the area.

Once fully operational, the solar plant is expected to generate approximately 1.78 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year , saving 503,800 tons of standard coal and reducing CO₂ emissions by 1.34 million tons annually. These benefits reflect China’s commitment to its energy and environmental future, aligning with global sustainability and decarbonisation goals.

The technological innovation behind the project

In addition to its scale, this project incorporates a key technological innovation: the use of a 66 kilovolt submarine cable for long-distance electricity transmission. This state-of-the-art infrastructure facilitates efficient transmission of energy generated by solar platforms to the national grid, expanding the possibilities for similar projects in other countries.
