China lanza el primer satélite reutilizable

China has taken a step forward in its space program with the successful launch of the reusable Shijian-19 satellite , which aims to conduct scientific experiments in space , including seed mutagenesis. This satellite is part of a mission that seeks to improve agricultural innovation by studying genetic mutations caused by exposure to cosmic radiation and microgravity.

The launch took place on September 27, 2024, using the Long March 2D rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in the Gobi Desert. This mission marks China’s first foray into the use of reusable satellites, which can return to Earth for reuse and also represent a key platform for advancing the country’s space technology .

The reusable satellite was launched for scientific purposes

In addition to seed experiments, Shijian-19 is carrying payloads from five countries including Thailand and Pakistan, promoting international cooperation in the space field . This collaboration reinforces China’s position as a major player in space exploration and technological research.

Chinese scientists hope that seeds exposed to space conditions will generate mutations that could lead to the development of new, more resilient and productive plant varieties. The research is part of a broader effort to ensure China’s agricultural self-sufficiency and advance its seed industry.

Shijian-19 will also be used to test components and materials made in China, further promoting domestic technological innovation . In addition, this satellite is key to future experiments in microgravity and space life.
