The National Oil Corporation of Libya (NOC) and Eni North Africa have announced a new gas discovery in Block D, located offshore the country’s western coast. This find reinforces Libya’s energy potential in the offshore segment and consolidates exploratory activity in the region.

Gas discovery in Libya boosts offshore exploration

The discovery occurred following the drilling of the J1-4/16 well, which reached a final depth of 10,458 feet. The operation was executed under Contract 4/16, where Eni serves as the operator.

Furthermore, tests conducted at the Metlawi field showed promising results. The first test recorded a flow rate of 14 million cubic feet per day, while the second reached 24 MMcf/d, confirming the reservoir’s productive capacity.

Technical results driving energy development

These production levels position the find as a significant asset within the country’s upstream portfolio. Likewise, the data obtained allows for progress in the commercial evaluation of the field and future development plans.

Block D is located approximately 95 kilometers offshore, in a strategic area for the expansion of offshore natural gas production.

Contractual compliance and operational continuity

This well represents the final commitment within the nine contractual obligations established in the agreement signed in June 2008. With this, the companies complete a key phase of the contract, opening the door to new stages of energy development.

Moreover, this type of discovery aligns with the NOC’s strategy to maximize the utilization of the country’s natural resources. The state-owned company seeks to drive sustained growth in the energy sector and strengthen its position in the international market.

Libya reinforces its position in the gas sector

The new discovery adds to a series of recent announcements in the country, where collaboration with international companies has been decisive in expanding the energy resource base.

In this context, Libya continues to consolidate its position as a relevant player in hydrocarbon exploration and production in North Africa, with a special focus on offshore natural gas development.
