Significant studies are underway to assess the feasibility of producing renewable hydrogen from wastewater treatment plants. The idea is to transform the Wastewater Treatment Stations (EDAR) into facilities that generate renewable energy for use in other sectors.

During the hydrogen production process, there are four main options for CO2 capture: steam methane reforming (SMR), coal gasification, partial oxidation (POX) and autothermal reforming (ATR); the latter being the one that has recently gained great popularity.
