TotalEnergies, the French oil group, announced last week the start of a bidding process in order to acquire 500,000 tons of green hydrogen annually to supply its refineries in Europe.

This initiative aims to replace the hydrogen currently used at its facilities in Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and France, as well as at the La Mède and Grandpuits (France) biorefineries, with hydrogen produced from renewable energy sources .

The TotalEnergies commitment

In a statement issued, the company explained that this transition towards green hydrogen , generated with clean energy instead of fossil fuels, has the purpose of avoiding the emission of approximately 5 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) annually for the year 2030. This move aligns with the company’s commitment to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 40% from its oil and gas operations by 2030, compared to 2015 levels.

Its CEO, Patrick Pouyanné, emphasized that through this tender, TotalEnergies intends to take advantage of the most competitive solutions provided by various suppliers. This will be achieved by offering them the option of signing medium and long-term contracts.

Simultaneously with the announcement of this public call, TotalEnergies also reported on the signing of an agreement with Air Liquide, a group specialized in industrial gases. This agreement aims to supply the Normandy petrochemical refining platform in France with 10,000 tons per year of green hydrogen and up to 5,000 tons of what is known as low-carbon hydrogen.

It is anticipated that this measure will result in a reduction of up to 150,000 tons per year of CO 2 emissions from the Gonfreville (France) plant.
