The future has arrived! They manufacture a ship that replaces crew members

HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, a leading HD Hyundai subsidiary, has delivered the world’s first ship equipped with an “artificial intelligence engineer” . The shipyard recently announced the delivery of a 180,000-tonne cargo ship to H-LINE Shipping, powered by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), featuring an AI-based automation solution.

Construction of the ship took place at the Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries shipyard in Yeongam, South Jeolla province, Business Korea reported.

How does it work?

The motor automation solution includes two main components: the Integrated Condition Monitoring Solution (HiCBM) and the Integrated Security Control Solution (HiCAMS). Both solutions are capable of diagnosing the status of the ship’s key equipment in real time and intelligently detecting emergencies such as fires, thus replacing engineers and deck crew during operations .

HiCBM is responsible for the real-time monitoring and management of the ship’s key devices such as propulsion engines, compressors and pumps. Thanks to artificial intelligence , it is capable of identifying and preventing possible failures during navigation, thus ensuring a smooth trip.

For its part, HiCAMS uses on-board closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to enable artificial intelligence to detect and analyze security-related events in real time. This system plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety of both the ship and its crew.

These two systems have the ability to be implemented on ships that are already in service, indicating the possibility of an expansion of the market for automation solutions based on artificial intelligence.

During testing, these systems were evaluated for safety and reliability under the supervision of the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). Last September, they obtained the ABS Basic Certification (AIP), which confirms their compliance with the established standards.

Unmanned ships: the new mode of navigation?

Last June, Avikus, a subsidiary of HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, achieved a milestone by becoming the first company to successfully cross the ocean with a large vessel equipped with an autonomous navigation system . This achievement marks a significant step forward into the “bareboat” era in the maritime industry, where long-duration voyages could be carried out without the need for navigators, engineers or deck crew.

With the commercialization of this automation solution, we are one step closer to making this vision a reality.
