The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has selected Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) to carry out the construction and management of the sixth stage of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, with an estimated budget of up to 5,510 million Dirhams, as reported by Dubai Media Office.

At the beginning of June, DEWA announced that it had accepted the cheapest offer submitted by Masdar for the execution of the sixth phase of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park. The Abu Dhabi Renewable Energy Company proposed a cost of 1.62154 cents per kilowatt-hour for the solar power plant.

“The sixth phase of the 1,800 MW solar park, using solar photovoltaic (PV) panels based on the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model, will come online in phases starting in the fourth quarter of 2024,” said Saeed Mohammed. Al Tayer, DEWA Managing Director and CEO.

In Phase VI, DEWA has achieved the lowest Levelized Cost of Power (LCOE) ever recorded, reaching 1.6215 US cents per kilowatt hour (kWh), setting a new record for its Independent Solar Power Projects (IPPs). ).

The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, which holds the title of the world’s largest single-site solar park , is projected to reach a capacity of 5,000 MW by 2030.

The incorporation of the sixth phase of the solar park will increase the total generation capacity to 4,660 MW.

Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park and other projects

DEWA has succeeded in attracting significant investment to the UAE from both the private sector and foreign banking institutions, thus generating increased capital flow for the Dubai economy and the country as a whole. The prominent utility company has announced the execution of another project with a total capacity of 433 MW.

In line with Dubai’s Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy, the city has set itself the goal of sourcing 100% of its energy supply from clean, renewable sources .

In June, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, presided over the inauguration of phase 5 of the 900 MW solar park. This fifth phase is expected to supply power to approximately 270,000 homes and contribute to offsetting 1.18 million tons of annual carbon emissions.

The total investment for the realization of the solar park amounts to almost 1,500 million dollars and once the project is finished, it is anticipated that it will achieve an annual reduction of carbon emissions of up to 6.5 million tons.
