They develop thin-film solid-state electrolyte that goes beyond innovation

Scientists at the University of California San Diego and the University of Chicago have devised an innovative technique for making a thin film of solid-state electrolyte known as lithium phosphorus oxynitride (LiPON) .

The team carried out tests of working batteries using their version of the LiPON film and found that it promotes uniform electrochemical deposition of lithium metal even without applying external pressure. This is accomplished by internal compressive stress and an initial layer of gold seeding.

LiPON: a solid-state electrolyte that shows promise

Lithium Phosphorus Oxynitride (LiPON) is a very promising solid electrolyte that facilitates lithium ion conduction and may be combined with a wide range of electrode materials for lithium batteries in the future. Despite this, current approaches to fabricating LiPON have limited researchers’ understanding of the material. Using their new technique, the team was able to create an autonomous form of LiPON, allowing for more detailed analysis.

The development of this electrolyte began in 1992; however, there are still many aspects to be discovered regarding its properties and interfaces. Challenges in studying it include its amorphous nature, its sensitivity to exposure to ambient air and electron beams, as well as the limitations of traditional synthesis methods used on solid substrates.

To overcome these challenges, the research team has devised a new approach to independently produce the LiPON film.

The result is a LiPON film that is flexible and transparent , making it possible to analyze it through various spectroscopic techniques to reveal its unique characteristics. This achievement has allowed a deeper understanding of the chemistry at the interfaces, as well as the thermal and mechanical properties of LiPON.

Taken together, the development of this convention-defying thin-film solid-state electrolyte brings us significantly closer to advancing lithium batteries with improved performance and increased safety.
