The Government of Bolivia is exploring options to reduce the use of mercury in mining, an activity that has caused alarming degradation of the environment, according to a statement by the representative of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in Bolivia, Diego Álvarez.

The use of mercury in mining

The exploitation of minerals is an activity that causes significant transformations in the world, but also entails a notable environmental impact. The use of mercury in this activity is one of the main sources of contamination of water and soil, in addition to causing poisoning in workers.

Given this scenario, the Government of Bolivia has proposed projects and options to reduce the use of this element in mining . These actions are expected to help mitigate the environmental impact and safeguard the health of workers.

It is relevant to point out that Bolivia is not alone in its effort to achieve this goal. At a global level, different entities and governments work on similar initiatives to preserve the environment and the health of the population.

Such a situation makes it imperative to find options that reduce the use of mercury in mining to safeguard our planet and well-being. The Bolivian Government is taking a significant step by proposing projects and actions to reduce the environmental impact of this activity.
