According to figures from the General Directorate of Energy, Hydrocarbons and Mines (Dgehm) , El Salvador is making great strides to complete its energy matrix with the use of renewable sources.

According to the Dgehm, renewable energy sources total 68.3% of the country’s energy contribution, in which geothermal energy provides about 20.7% of national consumption.

El Salvador becomes a model of sustainability: Two new geothermal plants will increase its energy matrix by 30%

To accelerate this trend, sources in the sector indicated, the government is building two plants that will use the heat that emanates from the subsoil to produce around 30 megawatts (MW), which will allow a contribution from this source of around 220 MW and 30 percent percent in the national energy matrix.

The authorities expect to have a regulatory framework and an action plan that allows a greater use of geothermal heat to achieve more economic and environmental benefits for El Salvador.

The Director of Energy of the Dgehm, Juan Carlos Guevara, quoted by Diario El Salvador, pointed out that geothermal represents a unique opportunity to promote the energy matrix towards a cleaner and more resilient future, and it is necessary, he said, to make the most of this potential.

Meanwhile, Laura Berman, senior energy specialist at the World Bank, stated that betting on the use of this resource can reduce the consumption of fossil fuels and the costs associated with electrical energy.
