China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) has launched its first US$828.04 million green hydrogen project in Mongolia, the largest in the world. It is located in Ordos, Mongolia and plans to reach an annual production capacity of 30,000 tons of green hydrogen through 390 MW electrolyzers.

The initiative will be used to support the goal of reducing carbon emissions from the adjacent ZTHC Energy coal-intensive processing pilot project, also located in Ordos.

This is a milestone in Sinopec’s hydrogen development after its green hydrogen pilot project in Kuqa Xinjiang in 2021. The Kuqa plant, still under construction, is expected to produce 20,000 tons of green hydrogen per year. It is intended to replace gray hydrogen generated from fossil gas at Sinopec’s Tahe refinery.

The project covers the generation of wind and photovoltaic energy, the transmission and transformation of energy, the production of hydrogen by electrolysis of water, the storage and transport of hydrogen. The installed capacity of solar and wind power generation will reach 450 megawatts and 270 megawatts respectively.

For its part, the production of hydrogen by electrolysis of water will reach a capacity of 30,000 tons per year, and the hydrogen storage capacity will cover 288,000 standard cubic meters. It is estimated that it will reduce carbon emissions by 1.43 million tons per year, contributing 87.17 million dollars to GDP and 4.36 million dollars in taxes.

Sinopec plans to become the leading developer and supplier of green hydrogen in China. It plans to build a supply chain in Mongolia, starting with this project. By 2025, Sinopec plans to produce more than 2 million tons of green hydrogen per year. Along these lines, it is developing another gigawatt-scale electrolysis project in Ulanqab, Mongolia.
