Construction of the first offshore wind farm servicing vessel, named Eco Edison, has begun in the US. and is expected to be completed by 2024.
“This new vessel will be the first of its kind in the US and will play a crucial role in the growth of the US offshore wind industry,” said David Hardy, CEO of Danish company Orsted Offshore North America, which works in the project jointly with the US companies Eversource Energy and Edison Chouest Offshore.
The vessel will be almost 80 meters in length and will be capable of accommodating a crew of 60 members. It will be powered by four Caterpillar 3512E EPA Tier 4 generators, each offering a power rating of 1,700 ekW, which are configured for variable speed operation. In addition, it will have a GE Power Conversion electrical system and the latest generation of Voith Schneider propellers, with integrated permanent magnet motors.
“The construction of this vessel will mean hundreds of new jobs for American workers as we continue to bring the benefits of offshore wind energy to communities across the country,” said Joe Nolan, CEO and President of Eversource Energy.
According to the Orsted company, the new ship will incorporate zero-carbon technology and will have high efficiency, low energy consumption and minimal greenhouse gas emissions.
Once operational, the Eco Edison will provide operational support to Orsted and Eversource’s offshore wind units, including South Fork Wind, Revolution Wind and Sunrise Wind, which will generate 1.8 GW of power, enough to supply more than one million homes.
