According to the Sustainable Development Report 2021 (SDR2021), Costa Rica ranks fourth in Latin America and the 50th country in the world in terms of sustainability.
The report, which included data from 165 nations, indicates that Costa Rica obtained a score of 73.5 on a scale of 100 and a performance index of 79.8 in its strategies for the well-being of its inhabitants.
In Latin America, Costa Rica was surpassed only by Cuba (49), Uruguay (41) and Chile (30). The list is led by Finland, Sweden and Denmark in the first three positions with a rating ranging from 84.9 to 85.9. The last place is occupied by the Central African Republic with a score of 38.3.
The report provides an assessment of how close nations are to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by rating their performance on each indicator.
Costa Rica was recognized for meeting affordable and clean energy while zero hunger goals; reduced inequalities; underwater life; life on earth; and peace, justice and strong institutions are the axes where more work is required. Challenges remain in other areas such as good health and wellness; decent work and economic growth; industry, innovation and infrastructure; and responsible consumption and production.
